annoying bloggers

You might have discerned from a few posts back that I just recently gave a presentation at work on personal blogging. It was fairly basic in nature...a Blogging 101, if you will.

What I didn't really cover was a list of don'ts...The list of things that you should NOT do/avoid in creating a good personal blog. I have my own set of preferences/things I think are annoying, and I know that many of you at different points have posted about this.  I didn't think that it was exactly the venue for telling people what to do. I prefer to be more judgy off the clock.

What would make my list? Tons of blinkies. Three column layouts. Tons of pixies. Oy.

What do you think is the single most annoying thing that a person can do/have on their blog? (Aside from eye-bursting green. Bwahaha.)

I used to think that would be Weather Pixies... but I actually kind of like them now. It's nifty to see what the weather is like where somebody is at.

Here's my top 3

1. Adsense.
2. Suicidal muse.
3. Stuff on blogs like this: ie; "I know my post makes no sense and I love that about it."

1. AOL host
2. Politics
3. Pics of family
4. Talk about sailboats
5. Bitching about work
6. fergotting to run spellcheck
7. Using hyperlinks to explain the post
8. News reporting cuzz you think its cool info
9. Making shit up just to seem funny
10. Unauthorized plagiarism of the term "FUCKTARD"
..... uh that's about everything I do on my blog.

Probably have committed most of those "blogging" sins listed so far.

I don't know...should there be rules about blogging if it's a personal site? Is the writing for the author or the audience? And if one starts to think "oh maybe they might NOT like this" - does that defeat the whole point of this medium?

The lack of restraint or self-consciousness makes so many sites so much fun.

Uh, auto-play music drives me nuts, and I agree that adsense is pretty annoying too especially when it's not configured right so you get really random links.

I think that's about it.

Are you talking about design alone? Because I ignore bad designs if the content is good.

Avoid being a political blogger or religious blogger. If you're going to do those things, be rational.

Reply to your commenters. Don't pretend like they're beneath you.

While it can be an outlet for your fears and hopes and dreams, don't bitch about every little thing that happens. It's just obnoxious.

Don't delete or edit comments that are left.

Leave the first-grade antics behind.

That's all I've got for now.

Deleting comments when they become annoyed with things you say. Some people simply cannot take constructive critism. Bastards. I love your blog by the way, and have previously read from afar....but thought i would join the debate.

Dave-It is 68 and rainy here. ;-)

Miss Ann-I knew how much you loved them.

Damien-Suicidal muses make me want to just die.

Y2K-I totally stole Fucktard from someone else.

Ling-It seems like the "sins" are about things one would be deliberate about. I think that writing with abandon is good. Just no blinkies.

Gingerbread-Autoplay is THE WORST!

Avi-But you are beneath me. ;-)

Misleading-Thanks for de-lurking! I think that deleting comments is generally a bit wanky. Constructive criticism is usually good...but I don't get why people feel the need to make an effort to be vicious when it's off topic, especially. I wouldn't delete it, though. Maybe just tell 'em to bite me or something.

No, no. I said you could be on top. Big difference.

Being assaulted by blaring music.

Poor grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling, or entries that look like text messages.

Wow. I totally delete annoying comments.

I like having absolute power on a site. Kinda like on the company newsletter where I have absolute editing privilege.

Bwahahahaha! Absolute power corrupts absolutely!

I don't get annoyed at the other stuff if the content is good. Make that, interesting.

My whole blog annoys the crap out of me.

Of course, I annoy the crap out of me, also.

Nice.

Nothing people post annoys me, because if it did, I wouldn't have spent the time getting annoyed.

-Now, if you really want to get annoyed, come to my blog...
